Dr. Barbara Tomaras

“I love my work! Spending my days surrounded by beautiful animals and on top of that having the chance to help them and save their lives, is a dream come true!"

Dr. Barbara Tomaras was born and raised in Porto, Portugal. She Graduated from Oporto University – College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008.  Following her graduation, she spent 18 months doing externships in 6 different cities in Europe and the USA. During those 18 months Dr. Tomaras worked with many different species and areas of interest: to come to the conclusion that her dream was to be an exotic animal veterinarian.

While doing a 3 month externship with Dr. Don Harris at Avian & Exotic Animal Medical Center, she decided that Miami was an amazing place to be an exotic animal vet and moved here to begin practicing. Since then and after getting her American Veterinary license, Dr. Tomaras has been working exclusively with exotic animals.

From 2012 to 2015 Dr Tomaras was the Veterinarian for Exotic Pet Vet, a mobile exotic practice in Broward.  From 2012 to the end of 2016, Dr T worked at South Dade Animal Hospital as one of the Avian & Exotic veterinarians.

In 2014, Dr Tomaras opened Exoticare Veterinary Services – a house call veterinary practice.

In Jan 2017 Dr Tomaras decided to dedicate all her time Exoticare.

Dr Tomaras stays very current on the latest advances in avian & exotic animal medicine, attending conferences annually and being a member of:

AAV - Association of Avian Veterinarians

AEMV - Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians

AMPA - American Mini Pig Association

ASGV - Association of Sugar Glider Veterinarians

Currently Dr. Tomaras is also one of the veterinarians at Monkey Jungle in Miami and the USDA Veterinarian at Pinecrest Gardens' Petting Zoo.
